ELDERS SPEAK

I Carry Your Heart
By Grandmother L.Cota Nupa Maka

I was watching a movie called In Her Shoes last night and at the end during the wedding ceremony this totally dysfunctional illiterate sister reads this poem. It hit my heart and stuck with me through out the night. My mind went reeling down so many dusty and neglected roads. I finally understood completely that all those who we have contact with in this life are in our hearts. We can never forget them or shut their memory out but must carry them forever in our hearts. It finally made perfect sense that we carry those who we place in our memory good or bad in our hearts for the duration of this life and possible more.

This possibility makes it easier to understand the pain of love, hate, anger, loss and all the range of emotions we suffer from or feel in this life time. We cannot separate them or control them they are just there, a collection of emotions and feelings that come from life’s memories. Perhaps in this life time we will find someone who reaches into our deepest places of feelings and emotions and opens our minds to love and understanding. They may not be who we have in our minds as the perfect person but they come to help us learn to love.

How our rational minds will find ways to hide the truth and mask the beauty from being seen. Through this whole Great Mystery there is but one truth; that is love no matter what, there is love. This love can only come from the heart and must go to the heart. An open heart will understand this and in death or life will learn the greatest thing we came here to learn was love. To be loved and to love in return is the answer to the riddle of life so simple and truthful.

This then connects me to the Tree of Life and the reason that name kept coming to me in the vision for the center. Strange how a few simple words of love that truly carry beyond the stars, can open the dusty doors and let the sun and moon shine into our hearts. From this day on I will share this whenever I perform weddings or any other ceremony. I trust that it will touch you as it has me with understanding of the Great Mystery. Love Waynonaha

I Carry Your Heart

by E. E. Cummings

I carry your heart with me I carry it in my heart.

I am never without it anywhere I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling.

I fear no fate for you are my fate, my sweet. I want
no world for beautiful you are my world, my true
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

Here is the deepest secret nobody knows
here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide
And this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart.

I carry your heart; I carry it in my heart.
