Japanese Medicinal Mushroom Enhancer

Active Hexose Correlated Compound

My subject is Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC).  AHCC is a newly developed functional superfood.  My research method was reading the following books about our immune system:  The Japanese Medicinal Mushroom Immune Enhancer, Prescription for Nutritional Healing, The Green Pharmacy, Healthy Healing, A Practical Guide to Naturopathy.

I also used the product for many months to determine if the product enhanced my immune system.  I have been using AHCC for approximately two (2) years.   As of this date I have had very good health and my immune system is working properly.  My conclusion is that I will continue to use AHCC as long as there is information available that supports the medicinal value of AHCC.

An Assessment of Active Hexose Correlated Compound

Active hexose correlated compound is relatively new to the United States. It is also a newly developed functional food. Experiments have shown that AHCC enhances natural killer cells activity, and may be considered a potent biological response modifier in the treatment of many diseases. However, the effects of AHCC in a clinical setting have not been reported.  I seek to determine whether AHCC can improve the prognosis of strengthening an immune system in human beings.

Subject of my research is that Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is a newly developed functional superfood.  My research method was reading various books, articles on the Internet, and my personal experience with Japanese Mushrooms.   I want to determine if AHCC can improve the prognosis of strengthening an immune system in human beings.   My conclusion is that I will continue to use AHCC as long as it continues to boost my immune system.  I feel that my findings will convince me that AHCC is a stable superfood that enhances the immune system approximately 100-300% if taken properly.

The method on how I conducted my research was by reading books, and other articles and websites relating to AHCC.  Some of the research articles were, support for cancer, chemotherapy side effects, hepatitis, inflammation, and fatigue syndrome, viruses, and other types of chronic diseases.“Results”

Clinical and Laboratory Evidence for Efficacy of AHCC:

AHCC has been used successfully to treat the following health conditions:

  • Cancer:  liver, breast, prostate, gastrointestinal, and multiple myeloma

  • Precancerous conditions: cervical dysplasia

  • Human Immunovirus (HIV)

  • Hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver

  • Chronic infections

  • Stress

  • High blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia

  • Glaucoma

Immune System Components that Protect the Cells from Cancer and Chronic Disease

White Blood Cells:

  • Macrophages "eat up" abnormal cells and invaders

  • Natural killer cells (NK) "explode" abnormal cells and invaders

  • Lymphokine activated killer cells (LAK) another type of killer cell

  • Nuetrophils white blood cell similar to macrophage

  • Cytotoxic lymphocytes (killer T cells) destroy invading organisms and

  • Virus or infected cells

  • Cytokines (Chemical Messengers Between Cells)

  • Interferon (gamma interferon) protects cells from viruses, destroys cancer,

  • Tumor, and stimulates NK activity

  • Interleukin-2 (IL-2) stimulates growth and activity of T cells

  • Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) induces tumor destruction

Summary of the Effects of AHCC on the Immune System

  • Increases the number of T cells as much as 200 percent

  • Activates the immune cells involved in "surveillance": NK cells, LAK cells and macrophages

  • Increases production of cytokines: TNF-a, gamma-interferon, IL-2 and Il2

  • Improves Thl/Th2 balance (celullar vs. humoral immunity)

The Japanese Medicinal Mushroom Immune Enhancer

I am a survivor of many diseases and many accidents.  I believe that the Creator intended for us to use the medicinal plants on Mother Earth.  If and when we decide to use them then we will have a stronger immune system that will help our bodies to heal themselves. To maintain a strong immune system and proper health, you must have clean air, clean water, proper diet you ingest, and daily exercise. In summary this is how you live in your body on a daily basis.

I have taken AHCC (Active hexose correlated compound) in capsule form for many months. I strongly support it as a natural medicinal immune enhancer for many types of diseases or ailments.  People are naturally skeptical when someone makes extravagant claims about the medicinal values of Mother Earth's plants as healing methods or their healing substances.  The dominant approach in health care today and in our culture is basing the disease upon the specific symptom.  I personally believe there are medicinal plants and herbs that can fortify the body and elevate the immune system more rapidly than pharmaceutical medicines.

We should take a look backward toward our ancestors.  We are walking through a green pharmacy each day. We need to be thankful for the herbs and plants that we have in our environment.  We are very surprised when a popular medicine like aspirin, well know for the treatment of pain, is found to have other properties; i.e., the ability to thin the blood to protect the heart.  It is also a know fact that aspirin was derived from the bark of the White Willow tree and partially from the Dogwood tree.

In the case of AHCC, a superfood nutritional supplement from Japan, there are some combinations of mainstream acceptance by the medical profession and by the general public.  In Japan AHCC is being considered a mainstream cancer therapy supplement and its acceptance is growing at a fast rate in other countries. This rapid acceptance is due to the volume of scientific research devoted to the many applications of AHCC.  AHCC is being used in over 700 hospitals in Japan and is being researched in fifteen Japanese medical colleges, and universities.  Outside of Japan, universities in the United States, China, Korea, and Thailand are conducting research on AHCC.   Health care professionals advocate the use of AHCC to enhance the immune system for the treatment of cancer, AIDS, hepatitis C, diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disease and many other afflictions.

This wide range of applications is causing many health care providers, physicians, and researchers to adopt a different view point about many chronic and life threatening diseases.  Perhaps lung cancer is not a disease of the liver.  Perhaps these are both diseases of the immune system.  A failure or deterioration of key immune functions could be the factor that links numerous health disorders of aging or degeneration together, even though we've studied them as separate diseases in the past I believe that if you have a proper functioning immune system then disease cannot thrive or live within your body.  I suppose you can remember your mother, grandmother or someone pickling certain vegetables on the farm.  The pickling crock was once an important item or feature of tradition.  The pickling crock was a way to preserve vegetables without refrigeration.  This was also a tradition of Japan.

I remember when I was in Japan; I watched "Mamasan" making pickles.  She was also preserving her own medicinal foods.  If you were poor like we were then a refrigerator was a luxury. We had to devise a way of keeping food for a long period of time so we improvised with pickling.  The Japanese were also famous for pickling.  Fresh vegetables were placed in a combination of rice bran and sea salt for days and even weeks, just as German housewives preserved cabbage for winter.  Not only does the pickling process preserve vegetables harvested during the warm months for winter consumption, but the fermentation enhances their nutritional value.  The salt fermentation results in the growth of friendly microbes and enzymes improving digestibility and efficiency as food.  Not only did the Japanese traditionally preserve vegetables for food, but they also prepared medicines using the same process.  The shiitake mushroom is a medicinal mushroom used for food.  Rare and precious reishi mushrooms were cherished for their medicinal properties.  Preserving these mushrooms was a tradition of the Japanese.

The Japanese are possibly the largest per capita consumers of herbs and supplements in the world.  Out of all the herbs there is one that stands out most well researched, powerful, and sought after supplements is the superfood known as AHCC.  AHCC is a mild sweet tasting monosaccharide produced from the shitake hybrid grown in rice bran extract.  Rice bran itself is known to have antiviral and immune-system-supporting effect.  AHCC was developed in 1987 at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences by Dr. Toshihiko Okamoto in a joint effort with researchers of the Amino Up Chemical, Ltd.

AHCC is extracted from the mycelia threads of the mushroom blend, which are grown in a -cultivation tank.  AHCC is obtained in a patented process of cultivation.  AHCC contains partially acetylated a-gulcan, which is known to have beneficial effects on the immune system.  AHCC breaks down nutrients into a more absorbable form that is easily integrated into the system.  It has such a small molecular structure that it is assimilated quickly by the white blood cells for immediate use in destruction of tumors.  It also strengthens the body's defenses. All of these, also with its immune strengthening functions, is another reason why AHCC can be called a superfood.  Besides helping the body, another important function of the immune system is to protect the body from microbes that cause infections.  Recently scientists have discovered a possible microbe connection in many chronic diseases that were previously considered to be infections.  A microbe has been identified in such diseases as arteriosclerosis, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, duodenal ulcers, diabetes, SLE (systemic lupus erythemotosus), rheumatoid arthritis, Hasimoto's thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, most forms of cancer, polycystic, ovary disease, some types of inflammatory bowel disease, cerebral palsy, and even most major psychiatric disease.  The list doesn't end there.  It is a well known that in hospitals, doctors, nurses and administrative personnel all test positive for microbes like staphylococcus, but only the people with weakened immune systems or the people with compromised immunity (patients) actually get sick from infections.  Let's take a look at the Immune System that protects the body.

The immune system is found throughout the body.  Much of it is located in the lymphatic system, which circulates the tissue fluid that bathes all of the body's cells in nutrients and chemical messengers.  The tissue also carries away the waste products of metabolism from cells.  The immune system is also made up of many types of cells.  The spleen, the tonsils, the adenoids, the thymus gland, the Peyer's patches in the small intestine area and lymphoid tissue.  The mucous membranes and bone marrow also play important roles in immunity.

The foregoing research has shown AHCC increases NK cell activity by increasing the number of explosive granules they contain.  The use of AHCC has increased the activity of NK cells by 300 percent and even gradually increasing to as high as 800 percent over time.  Because AHCC is a medical "superfood" that strengthens immune system function, it could be recommended for any type of disease.  Data from treatment of over 100,000 patients of various types of disease has shown that 60 percent of patients have benefited to some degree and many have found it to be most effective.  In Japan AHCC is widely considered to be the strongest known immune system strengthening biological response modifier.

AHCC is a completely natural food grade product AHCC is a completely natural food grade.  It is very safe even at extremely high doses (LD-50>12,500 mg/kg).  The recommended dose for patients with active cancer is 3 grams daily for two weeks followed by a maintenance dose of a minimum of 1 gram per day.  Cost may discourage some people from experimenting with very high doses, but the cost effectiveness of AHCC compares favorably with many immune stimulants, particularly when one considers its versatility, safety and reliability.  Therapy with cytokine IL-2 (interleukin-2) can cost as much as $100,000.  Interferon treatment can be expensive and unpleasant.  AHCC increases the body’s own production IL-2 and interferon without having to resort to an expensive outside source.   A combination of Japanese medical mushrooms (shitake and maitake plus other natural defenders) helps promote immune system health.

If we promote the immune system health then the body can properly heal itself from most diseases.  Having a strong immune system means that you can live longer, healthier, and productive life.  People taking prescription drugs should inform the prescribing physician and seek cooperation in evaluating the effects of AHCC in case of possible synergistic effects.  No negative effects or drug interactions with AHCC have been reported during the history of its use.  Be responsible, listen to your body, seek and ye shall find the solutions for a long and wonderful life and a healthier body.  True health can only be attained by maintaining a healthy properly functioning immune system.

Provide your body with the proper help, take a walk through Mother Natures green pharmacy, those weeds and mushrooms could boost your immune system and save your life or your loved one's life.  In the future I think that the medical arenas such as Natural Healing, Traditional Naturopathy and Alternative Medicines will recognize AHCC.
