A Makah Story

At Ozette two brothers undertook whaling although their father had not been a whaler. The elder was unsuccessful, but the younger killed several whales the first season. Thereafter he was always lucky, while his brother always failed. The elder often asked how he got his power, but the younger whaler kept his council, saying nothing.

The younger brother often lay all day with his back to the fire, and he slept there at night. He seldom ate, and then only a little. The way he
obtained his power was this: he dreamed of forty ghosts, and then cleared a place in the woods back of the village. Around it was a thick jungle of crab trees, which he made impenetrable by interweaving the trees and brush he had cut down, leaving only a narrow entrance. In the clearing he arranged some brush and small poles in the form of a canoe and four whales in a row.

Map of Holy Time

The Elusive Sunken Atlantis Revealed

For anyone, who inspects a chart of the oceanic bottoms in the region of Indonesia, Malaysia, New Guinea and Australia such as the Ice Age Map of Indonesia, they will readily concede that the South China Sea encircled by Indonesia indeed formed a continent during the last glaciation; that ended some 10,400 tuns ago; (1 tun = 360 days.) This chart clearly shows the partially sunken continent of Lemuria (New Guinea to Australia,) as well as the extensively sunken strip of Atlantis (Indonesia.)

The map leaves no room for doubt about the reality of what we are affirming concerning Lemuria and Atlantis, one almost wholly sunken and the other sunken to a very considerable extension. We remark that this map – in contrast to most others presenting proposed sites for Atlantis and/or Lemuria – is purely scientific, rather than an invention of ours or of others. It is based on the detailed geophysical reconstruction of the sea bottoms in the region in question and portrays the areas of depth under 100 meters, which were obviously exposed during the Ice Age when sea levels dropped by that amount and even more.

One of these maps was published in the National Geographic Magazine (vol.174, no.4, Oct.1988, pg.446-7.) It shows the world, as it was some 18,000 solar years ago, at the peak of the last glaciation of the Pleistocene Ice Age. In particular, please note the huge chunk of land of continental dimensions to the south of Southeast Asia, which became sunken when sea levels rose at the end of the Pleistocene. This sizable piece of land is Malaysia, the site that disappeared likewise at that occasion. No other regions of the world display a similar event, including the Americas. The conclusion is that Atlantis, if Plato was in fact speaking truthfully, could only have been located in that region of the world.  Read More>>>

Blue Star Prophecy

Dear Editor,

The feature story #4, "Blue Star Prophecy of the Hopi" (sic), found at,  contains false propaganda and misinformation. It is a distortion of the genuine sacred traditions of the Hopi People. It is not correct  that "the rotation of the Earth has been manipulated by not so benevolent Star beings."  The Hopi reverence the Kachinas, whom ancient tradition holds are the Star Visitors who come down from the sky and instruct the people. These Star Visitor "Kachinas" are benevolent and helpful, and most definitely would never harm Mother Earth.  The falsifying writer of that piece also speaks untruthfully when he misreports Hopi Prophecy and tries to assert that "some beings from the stars" will be "soul-less" and walk among people with a "lack of life force in their eyes".  Such false fear propaganda has no place in genuine Hopi Prophecies.  Also, it is disrespectful of Hopi oral tradition to mingle quotations from the Christian bible among Hopi Prophecies, as that writer does.  Please keep such false, misleading, and disrespectfiul distortions of sacred prophecies out of Manataka Smoke Signals News.  Thank you.  In the light, Richard Boylan, Ph.D./Wakinyan Zitkala Numpa - Two Thunderbirds

We are grateful for corrections by our readers.  They keep us honest. The story was corrected. ~Ed.

Blue Star Prophecy

Ngungu'taota (greetings we are relatives), Tutskwa I'qatsi (Land and Life are one),

I greet you in the Hopi way as an adopted Hopi whose father was a holy man and keeper of Hopi ancient knowledge. I am a friend of John Kimmey's, whose article on Hopi prophecy was published in your recent newsletter (I am the author of the book on our Earth Mother offered on John's website as a giveaway).

I wanted to briefly speak about, and amplify a section of John's article which I believe he would not mind my doing, for it is important to understand this point if we are to make the most of this Purification Time, which heralds the coming of what the Hopi call the Fifth World, and others the Fifth Sun, Heaven, Paradise and other names for the coming new Earth our Mother, Tuuwaqatsi, is in labor to become.

In his article John wrote: "...Our spiritual connection with our Mother Earth and a sense of a common destiny with her will be challenged. Each person will have to deal with that reality. Each will be tested. The prophecy instructions explain that our relationship with our Earth is fundamental to our being. We must embrace her spirit and take our instructions from her..."

It is crucial that the above point not be lost among the many other words of John's article. Our knowledge holds that we will have choices to remain with our Earth Mother or abandon Her for another place that will soon be announced to the world. This place has long been known to us and the members of the higher religious orders of other indigenous and non-native peoples (related to the directions), but has been kept secret for our protection. This was done because we are meant to always remain with our Earth Mother as She carries us home to the Fifth World. Our instructions direct us to speak of these matters now as the prophetic signs now indicate, along with the dreams and visions we have been receiving. There is some debate among elders about if and when to share this information, but speaking about our Earth Mother and this purification time can only help, and not hurt anyone, and it is our sworn duty to Tuuwaqatsi to speak out.

The bottom line of what I am sharing is to feel in our hearts that we must always trust in our Earth Mother, and never desert Her as given in our first pootskwani or spirit-law (Tutskwa I'qatsi, Land --our Earth Mother-- is Life), no matter what lures are dangled before us in the times ahead, or how fear may be used to drive us from Her. Our path to the Fifth World is ONLYwith our Mother, which is shown on the lower road of the Hopi Prophecy Rock. The upper road of the Prophecy Rock, shown leading to oblivion, warns of the destiny of those who do not remain immovable from our Mother in the coming times.

So, let us trust in our one-hearts to guide and lead us home with the Earth at the end of this transitional time, the final Purification for those who remain true to the Earth unto the Fifth World.

Planted Medicine Wheel...

Dear Manataka,

This is in response to: "Many tribes now facing..."

We the people that have respect for all Sacred people and their Ceremonies around the world, can no longer stand aside and allow for them to be harmed by those who choose to use them and harm them with such dishonor.

If your heart feels the call to share your experiences with the Manataka Indian Council I am sure they would be interested in hearing from you

To Manataka Indian Council;

Touchstone Farm has been planted with sacred perennial plants, prayed over, for many years, by the last Keeper of the Sacred Pipe (I hope I can say it right) Keeper of the sacred, white buffalo woman calf pipe.  His name was Chips.

I have worked with the plants over the years in the Planted Medicine Wheel. I got to know the nature of the plants, as the message or Balance.  Now, I have all this over, the internet, and the  World Peace and Prayer Days, with Chief Arvol [Looking Horse]  to think about.

Medicine Wheel, and there (maybe) a non-speakable issue here. But, it has to do with, issues of Sacredness and ceremonies. The Chief's relative's are at Burgandy Brook Farm and Chip's relatives were here at Touchstone for many years. I don't know how it is for Arvol's kid's at Burgandy Brook.  This is only my experience.

Balance, threats of arrest, and money people. And this year's World Peace and Prayer Day hosted by Chief Arvol Looking Horse (I was very

impressed by Arvol and the message he gave, and I was very honored to have to work the Medicine wheel with the Four Direction Plants, and be

Gatherer.  I did not know the Chief was excluding anybody from taking part, and I was surprised when I was the only person walking the wheel with the Chief and his wife and the two representatives from Blue Star Equiculture, David and Pam.

First of all, I want to tell you about, being involved with Blue Star Equiculture at Burgandy Brook Farm, in Palmer MA.  But first let me tell you some things about myself.  My cousin Debbie is the owner or founder, of message and land of Touchstone, she was Shaker.  I am, on my third, growing season on this land.   ~Melody M Thibodeau

Not My Queen

My Dear Manataka Friends,

I don't know if you caught the hack about Lizzy Windsor, aka the "Queen" Chief of "Canada" [Queen Elizabeth of England].  After October 1, 1947 the "Letters patent Constituting Office of Governor General" severed ties with the monarchy, when Lizzy the Liar was in Canada last month it was announced the Queen was going to commission the next Governor General from White Hall, this has not happened since, at a minimum, 1952 when Vince Massey was "appointed".  What we have been living under is the Code of Canon law or the law of the PAPACY ... this is a direct result of the 1491 Treaties between the Original People of Turtle Island and the Moors/Israelites/Masai. Lizzy is merely running interferance to protect POPE in its quest for the outright destruction of the planet. Hope this helps.  ~Patrick Ellis

Opposes Public Water Fluoridation

Hello Editor,

Anyone, who chooses, can use fluoride toothpaste and go to a dentist to receive fluoride treatments and a prescription for fluoride drops.  They are allowed to make conscientious decisions regarding themselves and their children.  When fluoride treatment of public water supplies is mandated, advocates are saying that they know what is best for all of us and that the rest of us should not be allowed to make conscientious decisions regarding ourselves and our children.  The first rule of medicine is “do no harm”.  There is an abundance of evidence that fluoridation is harmful.  The corporations that benefit financially from fluoridation are the big contributors to unscrupulous, incompetent politicians and health boards in order to force fluoridation upon us.

When water is fluoridated, those opposed to fluoridation have no choice.  When water is not fluoridated, those for fluoridation can purchase bottled water that contains natural fluoride.

No licensed medical doctor can force patients to take drugs against their will.  What right has anyone to force fluoridation upon other people?

There was a time when asbestos lined our pipes, lead was added to gasoline, PCBs filled our transformers and DDT was deemed so “safe and effective” that officials felt no qualms about spraying children in school classrooms and seated at picnic tables.  All of these chemicals are now banned.  Around the world: When communities with fluoridated water vote, 50% vote it out.  When communities without fluoridated water vote, 95% vote it down.  For more information, click Fluroidation  ~Robert Kroboth

Pickin' a Basket of Joy

Hello Manataka,

We went out to Pick and Pick at 4 when David got off last night...and  picked blackberries. They are incredible...perfect and huge..some were
even as large as my palm cupped..I joked we could fill a bucket with 5 berries. I picked 2 buckets and David got 4, then we got a bluebird
house to add to our collection and it came to $132.

YIKES chiggers, no ticks, no weeds, no THORNS!, a fraction the time picking of natural, clean as a whistle, and as many as we chose to
buy, us-pick or they.  We got home and proceeded to work them up as they were dead ripe and already starting to ferment. No time for supper but we were full anyway from eating as we picked. Each bucket made approximately 1 gallon of juice, foley-ed down. I froze enough for 4 pies, made 6 qt.  of juice, and 18 pint of berry jam by 10:00 p.m..  with David's help.  (My ex told the court, under oath, that HE did the canning in our
house.. yeah, right...why he was not punished for all the bald-faced  lies, I do not know. That was the beginnings of my experience of TPTB
and how corrupt our society has become/is.) WOW, what a job!  And what  beautiful pay-off!  ~Debra Massey

Animal Spiritual Guides

Dear Manataka,

I found your website really intriguing. There is a lot of wisdom there, and I was very struck by what you wrote about the animals that do seem
to be spirit guides for me.

I have a couple of questions if you think you may be able to answer them. Before I learned about the concept of spirit guides, I felt inspired to climb a Swiss Alp solo, and it was a very moving experience, in some ways like what people experience on vision quests. At the summit, as I stood by a high ridge where you could see far away, a giant golden eagle swooped down incredibly close to me, so close I almost fell from the ridge, startled by the closeness of the encounter, and then was gone. Does this suggest anything to you about the Eagle as a spirit guide for me? I should perhaps add that I feel an affinity with the qualities of the Eagle as you describe them, that I feel a real closeness to Jesus's disciple John who is identified with the Eagle, and that people have commented on how I have a bit of an Eagle look. At important moments in my life, I'll often see raptor birds (not necessarily eagles) circling above me.

A few years before that, I was in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota on Outward Bound, which is designed to be something of a vision quest
experience. On the solo night, I was very afraid of being confronted by a Bear, finally surrendered to sleep, and had a vague sense of a Bear
coming to me in my dreams; after that, I was constantly encountering Bear totems. This is a bit complicated, though, by the fact that I had
this experience just before becoming engaged, and my fiance loved all the Bear totems, and later, she divorced me.
Hope these aren't unfair questions, but if you do have a thought or two that might aid my reflection on this, I'd be much obliged.  Sincerely,
~B. Johnson

Hello B,

Suggesting a Spirit Guide based on your anecdote would be unfair to you and maybe to the eagle as well.   We are very careful not to make suggestions of this type -- as they may lead you to a path that is not yours.  For a similar reason, we do not interpret dreams for those we do not know.  Both instances are spiritual in nature and require a great deal of serious introspection, prayer and a deep 'knowing' that can bring about momentous revelations in a person's life.  These things must be respected for they are part of the inner-self and the soul.   Otherwise, the potential for harm exists and that is not the way of Manataka.

Feeling an infinity for a particular entity is good and it may indeed lead you to achieve a form of communication beyond mental telepathy and beyond the realm of the vibrational physical self.  However, simply because you like a specific creature, it does not mean the Creator of All Things will choose that creature to imbue your soul with a message, inspiration, knowledge or wisdom.   There are ways to achieve this Way.

In our humble opinion, the first step is to believe -- believe the Creator can and does use an infinite number of tools to teach and guide the human soul.  We need not put our faith in man's dogma and doctrine for it is fallable and often without Spirit.   The depth and breadth of American Indian philosophy and spirituality knows no bounds of freedom and cannot be contained within the words of Man.   Thus, we cannot share with you every step of the Way, but we can encourage you to open your mind, heart and spirit to the possibilities that exist in our dimension.

Assembly-Line Medicine

Dear Editor,

It is no hyperbole to say that the consequences of the recently passed "Obamacare" bills by the Congress will be horrific. In fact, I'm not even
sure that the English language contains a word sufficiently suitable to describe exactly how dreadful the consequences of this new national health
care monstrosity will actually be.

With all its faults, America's health care system is the finest in the world. Why else would rich people in Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and
elsewhere come to the US when the medical chips are really down? Socialized medicine doesn't work for them and it won't work for the United States.

The negative effects of Obamacare are already starting to take effect. Across the country, tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of
physicians are making preparations to retire. I would be willing to predict that the vast majority of physicians who are financially able to retire will
do so before 2014 (the year Obamacare officially takes full effect). And who can blame them? Not me.

Think of it: under Obamacare, physicians will be told to increase their patient load by at least one-third, or maybe even half. Imagine a physician
with a government-mandated patient load of maybe 5,000 or 6,000 people (or even more than that). Imagine some federal bureaucrat demanding that the physician spend not more than, say, 4 minutes with each patient. Imagine that physician being told what he or she will not be allowed to prescribe or what they will not be allowed to treat. Imagine the health care Nazis micromanaging not only patient care and treatment, but also wages and pricing. If you think insurance companies have too much control over medical care now, just wait until government-mandated (and controlled) medical care is implemented. In other words, you ain't seen nothin' yet! How could any self-respecting, conscientious physician practice medicine in an environment such as that? They couldn't--and they won't. And this will create a shortage of physicians like you won't believe, which only serves to push the patient load per doctor and quality of care per patient to unsustainable levels. In other words, prepare for assembly-line, one-size-fits-all medical care!  ~Chuck Baldwin

Those Who Can Give Healing Counsel

Greetings Manataka,

There are still some in my network of family and acquaintances who inquire as to why I rarely attend church, and do not accept the dogmas of the church.  There is a wide enough gulf between my ways and theirs that I no longer address this question. Often I just quietly respect their views, although they still try to persuade me to be in their ranks. But I am at Peace in my garden, with the insects, birds, animals, the sky, the wind, sun, and at night - the moon, stars, crickets, fireflies all around me - this is all the "religion" I want or need - and I have my healing and dreaming arts and many spirits to work with.

However one perceives Creator, the message I have received recently is that this is the time for those who can give healing, counsel, comfort or peace to all sentient beings - to give of themselves, without counting the cost or considering the boundaries of creed, politics, species, money or ethnicity. We must move beyond these manufactured barriers and view the whole being, the land, and the spirits of future generations. Consider the present as the most important moment, and lay all else aside - it can wait. Existence and matters of spirit and heart may not. Sometimes a small moment of our time is all that is needed to take a corrective action or to be a hollow bone for Great Mystery to work in someone’s life. Sometimes the small moments matter the most, and the big moments are mere distractions.

Follow the inner quiet voice of Spirit that whispers in your heart and not the noisy clamor of the world that leads so many astray so easily. Do not be afraid to give to others when Great Mystery asks you - give of your self. ~ K. Wilson

The Lost Teaching

Dear Manataka,

Is there a teaching that was a part of all Faiths at one time? That is now missing from many faiths? And is the Key to Understanding so many things? Why humans have to endure so much pain and suffering?
That no matter how things work in Creation today? At some point in the past? Higher life forms misused their Free Will and came down into lower realities where they did not belong?
Stayed too long, and became trapped by the forces that create these more solid realities? By crystalizing their spirit bodies and making them heavier? And creating souls that are affected by these realities, like magnetism? Not only in  this world, but others to come?
And then the human form was brought here for those souls to live in? A form that obviously does not belong here? In that everything on this world works within it's own ecosystem? Everything feeding off of each other and keeping any one thing from dominating all the rest? Until humans come along and throw these ecosystems out of balance? Yet the human form having the ability to adapt, and have the intelligence to reach out? So the soul/spirit that lives within can finds it's way back to where it came from? And now it's just a matter of course that more humans are born very day? And a soul or spirit must volunteer to live within that human to guarantee survival of the species? Until all things have been made right again?
My friends, We aren't little babies that Our Creator is going to do everything for us. We are very powerful spiritual, as well as physical beings. And We must learn self-control. For Our thoughts and desires are immediately satisfied in spirit.  Though they may take longer to manifest in this reality. And whether we believe it or not. We all get just exactly what we want. Even the hardship we must endure, which we come here for. To make penitence for past wrongs, and learn to become mature spiritual beings. ~Anthony Silva

The Spirit of the Moment..

Greetings, Good People of Manataka:

It's a wonder I didn't float into the operating room, with all the prayers and good wishes whirling around my head; it was an amazing experience.  The surgery was a complete success, and I'm now home recuperating, and other than the usual little bumps and setbacks, I'm healing really well.

The thought of Grandfather Bear on the mountain lifted my heart many times as I prepared myself physically and spiritually the night before, and "Thank you, Bear" was on my lips as I was admitted at 6:00 am the next morning.  I could feel his healing energy and prayers surrounding me, and many times afterward I have felt his touch and given thanks for his generosity and kindness.

I've had so many good people reach out to me during this difficult time, yourselves among them, and I'm so very grateful for all the prayers and assistance I've received.  My future job prospects are looking good, too - I have several possibilities open to me - and I am certain that this is due in large part to the good thoughts and prayers that have been sent my way.

Many blessings to all of you, and you in particular, Bear, for your kindness and lending-of-strength during this very challenging time.  I hold you all in my heart and in my prayers, now and always. Christina / Quanah'che Mawokee, The Feathered Serpent Lodge, Albuquerque NM

Symbolism of the Eagle Feather

Lumbee Story

In the beginning, the Great Spirit above gave to the animals and bird’s wisdom and knowledge and the power to talk to men. He sent these creatures to tell man that he showed himself through them.

They would teach a chosen man sacred songs and dance, as well as, much ritual and lore. The creature most loved by the Great Spirit was the eagle, for he tells the story of life. The Eagle, as you know, has only two eggs, and all living things in the world are divided into two. Here is man and woman, male and female and this is true with animals, birds, trees, flowers and so on.

All things have children of two kinds so that life may continue. Man has two eyes, two hands, two feet and he has a body and soul, substance and shadow. Through his eyes, he sees pleasant and unpleasant scenes, through his nostrils he smells good and bad odors, with his ears he hears joyful news and words that make him sad. Read More>>>

Challenging the Biotech Bullying of the Infamous Chemical Company

Only 26% percent of US consumers are aware that most of the non-organic processed food in the nation is contaminated with gene-spliced DNA, bacteria, and viruses - ingredients derived from Monsanto's genetically engineered crops or from animals given genetically engineered growth hormones, vaccines or feed.

The aim of the Organic Consumers Association's Millions Against Monsanto campaign is to make US consumers aware that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are hazardous, untested, and unlabeled, and that the chemical fertilizers and pesticides applied to GMO crops are damaging the environment, polluting our water and food, and releasing dangerous greenhouse gases. The U.S. government has never tested genetically engineered foods to find out whether they are safe for human consumption. Consumers need to know that many scientists are now warning that these foods are damaging the vital organs and fertility of animals, and therefore obviously poisoning humans as well. Monsanto and the food industry have up until now blocked all U.S. legislation to label GMO-tainted foods, because they know that most consumers, if given the choice (as in the EU, where labels are required), would not consume them.

"What you see with your eyes shut is what counts." Lame Deer, Lakota

Another whole world opens up when we close our eyes and calm our mind. Be still and know; be still and hear; be still and see; be still and feel. Inside every person is a still, small voice. Sometime it is necessary to close our eyes to shut down our perception in order to see. Try this occasionally; when you are talking to your child or spouse, close your eyes and listen to them. Listen to the tone of their voice; listen to their excitement; listen to their pain-listen.

Great Spirit, today, let me hear only what really counts.

Many Uses for Tooth Paste

Submitted by Sheri Awi Anida Waya Burnett

For those who still have teeth and have toothpaste in the home!

Toothpaste: it whitens, brightens, deodorizes, removes stains, and restores and protects enamel. But toothpaste’s cleaning capabilities work wonders on many things besides our teeth. The same ingredients that help polish our pearly whites can also soothe some common ailments, make household items sparkle, and even get rid of stains and pungent smells. Try out these fifteen tricks with a white, non-gel toothpaste (unless otherwise noted), and watch that cavity-fighting, breath-freshening tube of wonder work its magic!

1. Relieve irritation from bug bites, sores, and blisters. These skin irritations all tend to weep and, in the case of bug bites, often itch. Apply a drop of toothpaste to a bug bite or insect sting to stop the itching and decrease any swelling. When applied to sores or blisters, it dries them up, thus allowing the wound to heal faster. It’s best when used overnight.   Read More>>>

Medicine for the People

By Harvey Walks With Hawks Doyle

Arteriosclerosis or Atherosclerosis

Arteriosclerosis is a term applied to a pathological condition in which there is thickening, hardening and loss of elasticity of the wall of the blood vessels, especially the arteries. In other words hardening of the arteries. It usually affects persons of an older age but can also affect the young.  Atherosclerosis takes place when arteries are blocked and the blood cannot pass through freely.  Long before a stroke or heart attack, the buildup in the arteries is there.  It builds up over the years and arteriosclerosis is no longer a disease specific to senior citizens.  Young men in their 30’s or even younger show signs of trouble.

Recently researchers found clogged arteries in infants.  Even women, who were thought to have immunity to arteriosclerosis, suffer more and more from this disease in their quest for life changes or trying to take on more stress and responsibilities of the household.

What causes this killing disease?

This is what the experts say:

Too much fat intake

Too many chemicals in food, water and air

Too many metals in food, water and air

Too much sodium fluoride buildup

Too much sugar (more than 6 tsp. at one time causes blood to coagulate making tiny blood clots)

Too much environmental stress

Too little exercise

Too much smoking,  birth control pills

Too much noise pollution is a definite cause of arterial changes (Noise where you work, loud screaming, loud radios and stereo in vehicles).

The Fluoride Fraud

Written by Abby Martin

When was the last time you stopped to think about the one thing you can’t live without? I don’t mean the Internet – I’m talking about water. Without clean drinking water, life could not go on. This is why it’s so important that we know what is in our water. For the past sixty-five years, city governments nationwide have been adding a controversial substance called fluoride to municipal water supplies.

You probably recognize the word fluoride from the back of your toothpaste tube or from your visits to the dentist. But the fluoride added to our water is not the same as that in our toothpaste. The chemical added to our water is a fluorine compound called hexafluorosilicic acid that is generated as a by-product from the phosphate fertilizer industry.

Phosphates are minerals that are used to make fertilizer, and phosphate mining industry is a giant moneymaker. Fluoride is created by the production of fertilizer as well as in the manufacturing of steel, aluminum, glass, and cement. Previously, the lack of government regulation allowed gaseous fluoride to move through factory smokestacks and straight into our atmosphere. Now, environmental regulations require giant filtration systems called “scrubbers” atop the stacks to keep these toxic chemicals from escaping into the air. Fluorosilicic acid is then extracted from these scrubbers and condensed to a water-based solution which is packaged unrefined and sold to city governments for the purpose of water fluoridation.

In response to a lawsuit by the Center for Biological Diversity and allies, federal wildlife control agents last Friday temporarily called off plans to kill two endangered gray wolves in Oregon. Our lawsuit challenged the legality of the state-sponsored killing, especially because there are only 14 known wolves in the entire state. The wolves are being targeted because six cattle were killed in eastern Oregon in late May. The lethal action was ordered even though the depredations happened more than a month ago in an area where livestock carcasses -- always a draw for hungry predators -- were left out on ranch lands. During the month-long delay we won, the court will consider whether a "preliminary injunction" should be granted, which would give the wolves a longer reprieve.

The killing is being conducted under the auspices of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Service's wolf-management plan. Last week, the Center submitted comments in a review of this plan, arguing that it needs to be fixed to ensure that ranchers take all measures to avoid attracting wolves, as well as to increase recovery goals for wolves in Oregon above the paltry four wolves now called for in the plan. Gray Wolves back on Endangered Species List

MISSOULA, MT(August 5, 2010) - A U.S. District court today overturned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (FWS) decision to remove gray wolves in the Northern Rockies from the endangered species list. The court sided with Defenders of Wildlife and other conservation organizations that sued to restore federal protections. Judge Molloy ruled that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had illegally stripped the northern Rockies gray wolf of its Endangered Species Act protections in 2009 by relying on political, rather than biological, reasoning.

Stork Travels 8000 Miles to Be Reunited with Injured Lover

from News at by Monique Jessen
No distance is too far for Rodan, the lovesick stork. Making the trip from South Africa to Croatia every spring, the male bird travels 13,000 km to see his beloved female partner, Malena, who is disabled and unable to fly, reports Britain's Metro.  The loving storks cozy up, mating and raising their new chicks (they have produced 32 offspring so far) and teaching them how to fly. Rodan then departs to spend the winter months in South Africa and returns on exactly the same day, the following spring. Locals in the small village of Slavonski Brod in Croatia thought crippled Malena would almost certainly die when she was shot by a hunter in 1993, but thanks to the Vokic family, whose roof she lives on and her ever faithful partner, Rodan, she has survived for over 17 years. Reunited again last week, Rodan was more eager than ever to see his love, arriving two hours earlier than usual. "It was clear they were pleased to see each other," said one local to the Romanian Times. Stjepan Vokic added, "He knows he needs to return home because Malena is waiting for him."  The storks have become so famous in the village that it's not only Malena that waits anxiously for her partner to return, local residents and reporters gather round to welcome the tired bird home, every March.  Lets hope the couple's little chicks will be just as loyal and faithful as their Papa!  ~Submitted by Amanda Morningstar Moore

Guatemala Tomb may hold founder of a Maya dynasty

By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times

The remains in the well-preserved chamber are arrayed like a dancer and accompanied by the bodies of six infants.

U.S. and Guatemalan archaeologists have found an unusually well-preserved burial chamber that they believe is the tomb of the founder of a Maya dynasty, a find that promises new information about the empire's formative period.

Archaeologist Stephen Houston of Brown University said the tomb was so tightly sealed that the team found remains of textiles, wood carvings and other organic objects that normally don't last in the humid tropics. Even after 1,600 years, the smell of decay was still present when the team broke through the walls of the tomb, Houston said.

Enclosed with the remains of what the team believes to be an early king were the bodies of six infants, who may have been sacrificed to be sent to the afterlife with the king. Blood-red bowls surrounding the tomb contained human fingers and teeth wrapped in decaying organic matter, perhaps leaves, that may have been symbolic meal offerings, Houston said. Sacramental breads are still wrapped in that manner today in the region, he said.

"If [Houston] is right and this is a dynastic founder … it would be one of the only times we've found one of these people," said archaeologist Simon Martin of the University of Pennsylvania, who was not involved in the research. It is also "uncommon to find sacrifices in the tomb.… That is one of the things that marks it out as pretty special."

The tomb was found at a site called El Zotz, about six miles from the city of Tikal in the Peten region of northern Guatemala. Tikal was one of the largest and most powerful urban centers in the Maya civilization and El Zotz apparently flourished on its border, even though a variety of evidence suggests that relations between the two cities were not good.

El Zotz was previously known as a small-time tourist destination because of a large population of bats; zotz is Mayan for "bat." Houston's team began mapping the site five years ago and excavating two years later. It had not been much explored by archaeologists, but was heavily looted.   Read More >>>
