Come
experience the traditions and culture of the Native American people at
the Third annual Sarasota Indian Festival on January 29th, 30th and 31st
at Sarasota Fairgrounds, (New Location) 3000 Ringling Blvd from 9-5
Friday, 10-6 Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. Find hand made, authentic, one
of a kind fine arts and crafts. There will be paintings, pottery,
jewelry, sculpture, bead work, leather work, along with traditional
Seminole and Navajo food. Sarasota Indian Festival is honored to have
East meets West as our featured entertainment this year. East meets West
is a reenactment encampment focused on the way of life of the Native
American people from both eastern and western tribes. Little Big
Mountain of the Comanche/Mohawk nations and Jim Sawgrass of Muskogee
Creek heritage will educate and entertain, bringing lots of laughter and
fun to the event this year. Their group will also be performing
traditional Native American drumming, singing and various styles of
dance. There will also be storytelling and flute music performances
throughout the weekend. $6.00 adult, $3.00 6-12, 5 and under are free.
Please join us for this truly unique event! This is a Native
American fine arts and crafts event with exhibition dance, entertainment
and music. The focus is on authentic Native American arts and crafts. No
imports will be accepted, only hand made Native American made items will
be sold.

POWWOW STUFF...
MEANING OF THE WORD "POWWOW"
"Powwow was an Algonquin term, "pau-wau"
or "pauau", which referred to a gathering of medicine men and spiritual leaders.
"Pau-wauing" referred to a religious ceremony, usually one of curing. In the
1800's the European explorers observing these religious gatherings and dances
mispronounced the word as powwow. Jennings, The Invasion of America, p.
241. In 1646 the Massachusetts General Court decreed that “no Indian shall at
any time pawwaw, or perform outward worship to their false gods, or to the
devil....” ~From William Marder The word is correctly spelled
"powwow".

97th Annual Cherokee Indian Fair
Cherokee Indian Fair Grounds, Cherokee, NC
Each year the fair offers an opening parade,
midway, fireworks, traditional Cherokee food and competitions that bring
out the best of the Eastern Band’s basket makers, carvers, quilters,
gardeners and more. The fair also attracts high-quality entertainment to
perform each evening in the amphitheater. The fair began as a way
for members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to showcase their
arts and crafts and invite neighboring communities to the Qualla
Boundary, the tribe’s traditional homeland. The fair has grown since its
early days, but its original focus remains. This is a hugely popular
event among Eastern Band members and a great opportunity for visitors to
experience the fun, welcoming qualities of the Cherokee culture.

Eastern Shoshone Indian Days
Washakie Powwow Grounds, Fort Washakie, WY
Wyoming’s Wind River Reservation, has 2.2 million acres, is the third largest in
total land size of all Indian reservations in the entire United States. The
largest annual event on the reservation is the annual Eastern Shoshone Indian
Days, which features one of the largest powwows in the region, an all-Indian
rodeo and a reenactment of the signing of the Treaty of 1868. Sacajawea is
allegedly buried there. According to local historical accounts, Sacajawea, a
native of the Idaho Lemhi band of Shoshone, came to live with the Eastern
Shoshone several years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition ended. Here she was
called Wad-ze-wipe, or Lost Woman, and lived to be 100.
