For generations, the Native American Hand Drum has been an integral component of ceremonial and social practices for many tribes and clans. Honorable singers throughout North America perform songs of respect, thankfulness, love and laughter using Hand Drum Songs. Eastern tribes use well-crafted hand drum songs to explain stories of battles, hunting expeditions or simple daily life experiences. In the Northern Plains, Cree and Blackfoot tribes gather during the winter season for Round Dance Ceremonies. In many cases, hundreds of Round Dance singers join together for social dances while honoring respected elders and families. In recent years many of the largest Pow Wows have hosted Hand Drum competitions. “Champion Hand Drum Songs” is a collection of the best Round Dance songs and singers that travel and compete throughout Indian Country today.
