Manataka Elders Appoint New Ambassador to Latin America
Elders of the Manataka American Indian Council formally approved the appointment of Otto Riollano Caballo Blanco Davila of Puerto Rico to the position of Ambassador to Spiritual Elders of Latin America.
Davila, 69, is a retired university president, administrator professor and entrepreneur. Davila's biography will appear in the May Smoke Signal Newsletter
The purpose of the new ambassadorial position is to reach out to our brothers and sisters in the South, to let them know about Manataka -- the Place of Peace – and to strengthen our common bonds through the various forms and means of exchange that would be possible and feasible and, above all, through our common language: prayer.
"We will open channels of communication and exchange, to promote the re-union, the bringing closer, of indigenous people, based on what we share in common: our profound spiritual awareness, life principles, code of ethics, a similar recent history (the colonization events of the last five hundred years), current “survival” challenges and a growing revival of interest in learning and knowing about our origins as a guiding and redeeming force for the present," said Davila.
According to the Elders, there is a critical need for dominant society to learn about the original wisdom, knowledge and attitudes of the indigenous people as a living and most relevant source from where they can draw inspiration and guidance for the new paradigms urgently required to face the challenges of the present -- and survival of the human race.
Davila
will travel to the mainland United States in April and participate in the
upcoming Manataka Encampment scheduled for April 23 at Bald Mountain Park
and Retreat. (see related story). Davila will be honored during
ceremonies and Manataka members are encouraged to come out and meet
Davila. |

Every spiritual person should carry a vision of God's will in every area of their life. One day at a time, each morning at sunrise, we should spend time praying to the Creator. We should say something like, my Creator, this morning I ask you to show me, in terms I can understand, what you have or me to do. By doing this daily, over time, we will develop an unquestionable vision. Each person is responsible for taking the time to do this. It will bring great joy and peace of mind to those warriors who do. My Creator, give me the vision, today,
of what you want me to do. |
Elder's Meditation
The Creator designed a very simple set of Laws for us to follow. If we follow these simple things, we'll be happy. If we do not follow these simple things, our lives become complicated. For example: Respect Mother Earth Love one another Be truthful Give to your brother and sisters Be gentle with each other Be happy Great Spirit, let me lead a simple life. |

ACTIVATION OF THESEDONA LANDSCAPE TEMPLEBy
Adam Yellowbird
We live in a time of profound changes. These changes occur on the level of our consciousness, but also with the Earth itself. There are many ways to look at these changes and there are many interpretations about what their cause(s) are. Even science begins to acknowledge that what is happening can no longer be seen as extremes of normal fluctuations. The Earth is in motion and the weather is erratic not only in faraway places but locally as well. In the winter of 2004/2005 there were several floods in the Sedona and Camp Verde area and Arizona had 6 earthquakes within one week (at the end of February/beginning of March 2005). The strongest had 4.6 on the Richter scale.
Many
people pray and hold ceremonies hoping to prevent more big natural
disasters, such as the tsunami of December 26, 2004. The ceremony to
activate the Sedona Landscape Temple on April 24 is one of the worldwide
activities to heal and balance the Earth to prevent these types of
disasters. Of equal importance is the intention to activate the energy
of the Sedona area to a more optimal state.
Whenever we pray and/or hold ceremonies it is helpful if we understand what actually happens during these activities and on what to focus our intention. It also helps to realize that in the process we are not only healing the Earth, but also ourselves. We are intricately connected with the Earth.
The Earth “Source” Connecting
with the Earth was and is an essential part of spirituality in many
ancient and Indigenous traditions. In these traditions spirituality is
an essential part of their daily lives. The separation of science and
spirituality in our Western culture has estranged most of us from the
Earth. The Earth has become an object that is there to use.
We no longer consider her to be a living entity. We have
forgotten that she is truly a “mother” who provides us with
everything we need on every level of our being.
What
does Mother Earth provides us with? In the first place the Earth
provides us with every atom in our body - either directly or indirectly
- making us inseparable from the Earth. Secondly,
the Earth provides the electromagnetic environment we need to function
optimally. NASA discovered
with the first astronauts, that we do not function without this field.
The Earth also creates a special electromagnetic frequency that is
important for us: the Schumann resonance frequency of 7.83 Herz. This
frequency resonates with our brain activity in the lower alpha
(relaxation and peak performance) and higher theta (deep relaxation,
meditation and access to our unconsciousness). The Schumann frequency
stimulates a broader functioning of our brain. In
addition this frequency helps us to connect with the subtle energies of
the Earth.
The
subtle energies are a third gift to us. These energies resonate and
interact with our meridians, chakras and subtle energy bodies. On Earth
we find those energies in lines, grids and vortexes.
Vortexes,
Lay
Lines and Grids. Many
books have been written on Earth energy lines and grids. There are,
however, only a few books on vortexes and all of them are about the
vortexes in Sedona. This is quite remarkable, because vortexes exist
everywhere. They are found where energy lines are, because almost all
vortexes are found in connection with lines. We define a vortex as a
place where energy goes in and/or out of a system. That system can be
the Earth (vortexes), our body ( the chakras and acupuncture points) or
the Universe (galaxies, black holes and white holes). According to
science whenever energy moves it will move in a spiraling way, hence the
name vortex (vertere (Latin) = spiraling).
There
are many different types of vortexes. To a varying degree they all have
an effect on us. From some we do not yet know what the effect is, but
from others we now have quite a good idea. There are vortexes that
resonate with our meridians. Others resonate with our chakras or with
our energy bodies. There are grid systems with vortexes that hold our
consciousness, the Christ consciousness and even other types of
consciousness.
Although
vortexes can be found everywhere it does not make Sedona less special.
Sedona has more vortexes and a larger variety of them than any other
place that I am aware of. When we compare a certain vortex with a
similar one in Europe the one in Sedona has a diameter 5 times larger
than the one in Europe revealing that the amount of energy in each
vortex is very high. Sedona is truly “a place of vortexes”.
Communication
Lines To
understand the landscape temple of Sedona we need to mention one other
type of lines, the communication lines. These lines are induced through
human consciousness during certain activities. These lines appear
between churches. They appear when we handle (charge) stones and place
them in the landscape. They also exist between rocks with petroglyphs.
The lines have a certain type of sub-lines that were named triads by
researchers in England. Between churches and stones you usually find
lines with 3 triads. Between stones with petroglyphs you may find lines
with 5 triads. Between some of the larger ceremonial kivas we find lines
with 9 triads. There exist even lines up to 12 triads. If we can create
lines with 3 triads between churches and Jeanne (my wife) and I can
create lines up to 5 triads with crystals, I wonder what state of
consciousness (or maybe even what consciousness) can create lines with
12 triads? The
Landscape Temple of Sedona The
term Landscape Temple comes from the book “Sedona Sacred Earth” by
Nicholas Mann. Geomancy (Mann is a geomancer) looks at alignments and
mathematical patterns of prominent features of the landscape. In this
way he discovered in the Sedona landscape a 6-pointed (hexagram) and
5-pointed star (pentagram). He also discovered a couple of alignments,
which are called ley lines. In addition he saw a snake and a bird in the
outlines of the landscape. Initially skeptical I was surprised that I
could indeed find a hexagram almost identical to the one Mann has drawn
in his book. Each point was anchored on a vortex. The lines between the
points were communication lines with 12 triads. This means they are
induced in a very high state of consciousness. At the point near
Steamboat Rock were 2 extra lines. In one of them the energy was flowing
towards the star and in the other the energy was flowing away from it.
The energetic center was close to where Mann indicated the center: just
above Devils bridge.
I
was, however, not able to find any lines indicating the presence of a
pentagram. This does not mean that Mann is wrong. The potential for the
formation of this sacred symbol may be present but not yet manifested as
with the hexagram. Consciousness and Earth energy activationAdam
Yellowbird has had a vision that he gives form via Earthworks and through The
Institute for Cosmic Awareness. He organizes ceremonies together
with Elders of many traditions to balance and heal Mother Earth. In his
vision the hexagram and pentagram are very important. The hexagram
represents the balance of the masculine and the feminine. The pentagram
represents “man”. He
felt guided to organize a ceremony to activate the pentagram and the
hexagram in the Sedona landscape. As
Sedona already has so much energy what will the effect of such a
ceremony be?
I
believe that every ceremony with focused intention will have an effect
that goes beyond our current understanding. This ceremony will be a
contribution to the healing and balancing of the Earth. In addition
there will be a localized effect that is very important for Sedona.
Based on research it has become clear that none of the vortexes and
lines are optimally activated. Increasingly many types of human activity
deplete the energy even further. Activation on the scale as is planned will stimulate the
activation of many vortexes and lines in Sedona. Several vortexes and
lines will be measured before and after the ceremony to study the
effects the ceremony will have on them.
One
of the most interesting aspects will be the pentagram. Will a group of
dedicated people be able to physically create a pentagram in the
landscape? Will they be
able to induce lines forming a pentagram with points anchored on
vortexes? If that will happen it will change the energy of Sedona and
increase the experiences of those who will visit these areas. Who would
not like to participate in such a wonderful and challenging event? The activation of the Sedona Landscape Temple will happen on April 24, 2005 starting at 9.30 am. MESSAGE TO THE PEOPLE OF MANATAKA
Chief Däbädi Thaayrohyadi Bermudez Council of Elders and Guardians of the Otomí Olmec
Toltec Teotihuacan Tradition International
Indigenous University
PLANETARY
CONNECTION FOR THE HEALING OF THE MOTHER EARTH FOR
LIFE AND PEACE Consequence
of the great wound of the Mother Earth, opened in the Indian Ocean
caused by earthquakes and tidal waves (tsunami) in ancestral land called
today Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Maldivas
and Malaysia, the Elders, Wisdom Keepers
and Guardians of the Otomí Olmec Toltec Teotihuacan Tradition
from Mexico send urgently this
message to the heart and conscience of this region of the world and all
the humanity. A.
We send our greater offering of songs and priers of light, peace and
love to all the families and communities of the disaster’s areas. We
join to all our sisters and brothers so that they can find the healing
soon, to get balance in the physical, mental and spiritual dimension of
their lives affected by the catastrophe. We connect in spirit and truth
so that the deads can find peace and the hope of life can continue. B.
We call all the women and men of the Planet Earth to work together, to
act in all possible forms to avoid the appearance of epidemics and
infectious diseases and to stop greater deaths and their undesirable
consequences. The humanitarian aid must arrive and occur in physical,
material or economic, mental and spiritual way, always sustained by the
love for life, mother earth and peace. C.
We the Indigenous Peoples and Nations, as Earth Guardians know that the
centers of energy and vibratory fields of several regions of the Earth
have been affected considerably by the lost of the sacred and the
disconnection with the spirit of the Mother Earth, is the consequence of
the wars of the groups that seek the power and the control of the world,
the xenophobia, racial discrimination and genocide against peoples
(indigenous, tribes), the terrestrial and submarine atomic experiments,
the pollution and devastation of the planet, with the consequent
extermination of plants, animals and the human specie. With
the catastrophe of the tsunami, it has caused vibrations of pain and
weeping, waves of pain, anguish, suffering, fear sensations,
preoccupation, deficiency of confidence, rage, solitude, neglect and
death have been created in the place of the disaster and propagated in
all the planet, which can cause vibratory fields of negative energy in
different levels and forms, that they can cause diverse epidemics and
diseases, affecting the mother nature, the human beings mainly, and also
to our sisters plants and animals. Today
it is important to transform that energy in acts of Compassion and
Sacred Love. All we are responsible in which it is happening to us. It
is time to feel, to think, to say and to act, for transforming this
situation, is necessary to generate high frequencies of sonorous
vibration, with the power of prayers, with acts of brotherly aid and
universal love. D.
We considered urgent to make a great connection with the energetic and
healing power of cosmic sound. Let us make feel the medicine of the
vibration of the humanity sound through our voices like prayers,
meditations, music and songs, with musical instruments ceremonial like
the sacred drums, including the drum of our heart.
According
to a Prophecy Revealed by the Otomí Elder Sages to the Indigenous
Peoples and all Humankind and a Vision of our Venerable Ancestors, the
day when the Sounds of Eight Thousand Sacred Drums join together will be
the beginning of a true Healing of Mother Earth, of All the Species and
of the Human Family – which is now in total disequilibrium – in
order to be able to live together on the road to Sacred Peace, in
harmonious union with the Universe, Mother Nature, the Community, the
Family and our own Hearts. It is time to re-unify ourselves and
rediscover for ourselves all the Seeds of the Four Directions in order
to reactivate cosmic energy, heal historical wounds and heal our Mother
Earth by respecting life and the liberty and dignity of our Peoples.
E.
This is that we call to all the family of the four directions to join
for the healing of the wound caused by tsunamis, by the lack of
connection with the cosmos, with the sacred. Let us honor all people
died, thousands of sisters and brothers offering their life by the
healing of the Mother Earth, for Life and Peace. F. Under the following postulates or sacred principles:
G.
With planetary harmonic connection, this Ceremony of 8000 Drums Sacred
will help to regenerate field limitless of powerful vibration, an
enormous effect of cosmic sound in high frequency that will be
concentrated in the Island of Sumatra, the Philippines - the place where
tsunamis began on December 26 -, and then this energy will be expanded
toward Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Burma, Thailand, Maldiva and
Malaysia, in concentric waveform by sea, air and earth, radiating
intensified light, impregnating and bathing of love of all the human
family, curing all the living beings (human, animals and plants of the
zones affected directly and of all the planet), this will help to purify
and to harmonize to the Mother Earth and the Humanity. With
our love will emerge a positive field of positive powerful vibration,
will help to transform the suffering, the wrath and the pain, in greater
peace with justice and dignity for everybody. That it means a call to
transform all the conflicts by pacific routes and non-violence. Right
here and right now, We the Guardians of the Earth, for Life and Peace,
Women, Men, Children, Children, Young people, Elders of all the
directions are called to reaffirm the human brotherhood and survival of
the Planet. Because the passed, present and future generations must know
that we have existed honoring our mission of Light and Love, that our
sacred fire stays ignited, that our sound continues being listened and
our Song of Life blooms forever. TO

The Creation of a Sheeple
Start with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it.
Before long, one of the monkeys will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, all of the monkeys are sprayed with cold water.
After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result - all the monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, none of the monkeys will try to climb the stairs. Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him.
After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted. Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm!
Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth.
Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done around here.
And that, my friends, is how federal policy begins. How does it feel to be the monkey?Submitted by Crystal Harvey
How Women Can Age Gracefully
Any woman can have the body of a 21-year-old -- as long as she buys him a few drinks first.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.
I've still got it, but nobody wants to see it.
I'm getting into swing dancing. Not on purpose.
Some parts of my body are just prone to swinging.
It's scary when you start making the same noises as your coffeemaker.
I think I've reached my sexpiration date.
The good news is that even as we get older, guys still look at our boobs. The bad news is they have to squat down first.
These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, "For fast relief."
I've tried to find a suitable exercise video for women my age, but they haven't made one called "Buns of Putty."
Don't think of it as getting hot flashes. Think of it as your inner child playing with matches.
Don 't let aging get you down. It's too hard to get back up.
Remember: You don't stop laughing because you grow old, You grow old because you stop laughing.

Health Alert I:
Terminator Gene Technology
Threatens All Life
Consumer, farmer, and environmental organizations across the globe are mobilizing to stop the legalization and commercialization of the controversial Terminator Gene Technology, whereby seeds are genetically engineered to commit suicide after one growing season. The biotech industry and seed companies support the Terminator Technology, because it prevents farmers from saving their seeds and forces them to buy seeds every year.
In addition, scientists are concerned that this could lead to killing off a wide range of crops and plants, as pollen from plants with the Terminator gene spreads unpredictably in the wind. After a massive international campaign in 1998, Monsanto Corporation announced they were shelving plans to commercialize the Terminator, while the United Nations (UN) called for a global ban. But on February 11, 2005 renewed efforts to overturn the worldwide ban were launched at a UN conference in Bangkok.

Hospitals Can Make You Sicker
Some hospitals are not the "safe havens" many people believe them to be. According to reports, a British documentary crew found the antibiotic-resistant bug, MRSA, present in public areas within six English hospitals.
This antibiotic-resistant bug (staph infection) was discovered through swab test results. Swab testing was conducted according to strict scientific procedures and samples were taken from areas of the hospitals used by patients and staff. At one hospital, the documentary crew found overflowing toxic waste and used surgical gloves on top of a paper bin outside a public elevator.
Some of the hospitals disputed the claims against them, stating the testing methods were of questionable nature. In fact, some hospitals suggested the tests could have picked up another, "harmless" bug, known as MRSE. However, it has been discovered that MRSE is actually harmful and can cause serious damage in extremely sick people.
Further, some hospitals stated their own tests found no MRSA. Apparently one hospital even offered to look at the documentary crew's swab results to determine if MRSA was present, but the results were never sent for analysis. Interestingly enough, all of the findings came just days after the government appointed a new chief nursing director in charge of ridding hospitals of MRSA. In light of this information, hospitals claimed they were actively fighting infection.
The director of Infection Prevention and Control said it is appreciated that the public is showing such a strong interest of the infection risks from hospitals; however, he noted that some reporting on the matter has caused an unnecessary degree of concern. BBC News 10-25-04

Health Alert 2: Right to Choose Vitamins and other Supplements May End This Year
Your right to choose your vitamin, mineral and other supplements may end in June-August of this year (2005).
After that U.S. supplements will be defined and controlled by the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The CODEX ALIMENTARIUS (Food Code) is setting the supplement standards for all countries in the WTO.
These codes will be enforced by the WTO and will over ride U.S. laws. The U.S. President and Congress agreed to this take-over when the WTO Treaty was signed. Violations are punished by WTO trade sanctions. CODEX drastically restricts vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements. CODEX met secretly in November, 2004 and finalized "Step 8 (the final stage)" to begin implementation in June, 2005
The CODE includes: (1) No supplement can be sold for preventive or therapeutic use. (2) Any potency higher than RDA (minimal strength) is a "drug" requiring a prescription and must be produced by drug companies. Over 5000 safe items now in health stores will be banned, terminating health stores as we now know them. (3) CODEX regulations become binding internationally. (Already implemented in Europe.) (4) New supplements are banned unless given very expensive CODEX testing and approval.
CODEX now applies to Norway and Germany, among others, where zinc tablets rose from $4 per bottle to $52. Echinacea (an ancient immune- enhancement herb) rose from $14 to $153 (both examples are now allowed by prescription only).
Supplements such as Vitamin C above 200 mg, nicin above 32 mg, and Vitamin B6 above 4 mg-all are now called "drugs" and will be banned as over-the-counter drugs. No amino acids (arginine, lysine, carnitine, etc. (these are essential amino acids!), essential fatty acids (omegas 3, 6, 9, etc.), or other essential supplements such as DMEA, DHEA, CoQ10, MSM, beta-carotene, etc. are allowed.
The CODEX rules are not based on real science. They are made by a few people meeting in secret (see web sites below), not necessarily scientists. In 1993 the FDA and drug corporations tried to put all supplements under restriction and prescription. But over 4 million Americans told Congress and the President to protect their freedom of choice on health supplements. This successful outcry resulted in the DSHEA Law (pronounced DeeShay) was passed in 1994, and DSHEA protects YOUR freedom of choice on health supplements. But this will be over ruled by CODEX and the World Trade Organization.
Virtually nothing about it has been in the media. What the drug corporations have failed to do through Congress they have gotten by sneak attack through CODEX with the help of a silent media. What can be done at this late hour?

Many writers and intellectuals have contributed to the understanding and the defense of Native peoples; Vine Deloria Jr. captured the mind of a generation.
Over the course of four decades, Vine Deloria Jr. provided enormous perception, guidance, strategy and sheer analytical heft to the struggle for respect and justice for American Indians. Thus Deloria's unique creative genius stands out above the best of the best. This is not stated lightly; many individuals have made wonderful contributions in the same direction over the same period, some even sacrificing their lives - valiantly and selflessly in defense of their peoples. But in every generation, too, to paraphrase the late Muskogee medicine man, Phillip Deere, there is one that hits the click-stone just right, and sparks the fire.
For that reason, primarily - but leading many other reasons - for sparking the intellectual fire of political, legal, historical and spiritual illumination, for lighting the path to the mountain-head of knowledge and pointing out the way ahead, Indian Country Today's editorial committee is proud to bestow the 2005 American Indian Visionary Award upon Dr. Vine Deloria Jr.
There is no one in Indian country quite like Vine Deloria Jr. Already a mature political mind at the genesis of the tumultuous American Indian activism that erupts in the late 1960s, the young lawyer-historian-theologian penned the early books that galvanized political thinking and discussion among the new wave of activism in Indian country. Deloria served as executive director of the National Congress of American Indians from 1964 to 1967. He was a young contemporary of the generation that confronted termination, active and brilliant. So that when the rallying cry of sovereignty and self- determination sounded loud and clear in Indian country, Deloria was readiest of all to make sense of it, to fortify it, to lead the discourse.
Deloria's early work of deciphering the Indian history within North America from a Native perspective proved invaluable in tying together and coalescing many disparate but kindred Native groups engaged in tribal and other contentions. It was the work that placed everyone in the feeling of belonging within a shared intellectual tradition. Deloria's work, initially in the vein of an Indian manifesto, would continue to deepen over the decades, to become canon for the next two generations of Native scholars. Consistently and bravely going ahead of other scholarship to identify crucial issues in Native history, religion, culture and science, Deloria's oeuvre will engage the hearts and minds of Native and non-Native scholars for generations to come.
Those among our staff and columnists who were at the Indian movement newspaper, Akwesasne Notes, during the early 1970s, heyday of the Indian activist movement, remember that, ''Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto'', was always the hottest selling book of the month at The Notes Bookstore. From the Northeast to Minneapolis to Denver and Albuquerque to Los Angeles and San Francisco, from the hardscrabble safe-houses of the American Indian Movement to the polished floors of new academic programs, more likely than not, you would run into a dog-eared copy of ''Custer Died for Your Sins'' (1969), often in the company of its sequel, ''We talk, You Listen'' (1970), another early classic in which Deloria managed to capture the mood and personalities of the time far better than any other contemporary writer - Indian or not. Many an Indian activist's education began with either or both of those books and as Wilma Mankiller has written of Vine Deloria Jr., ''No writer has more clearly articulated the unspoken emotions, dreams and lifeways of contemporary Native people.''
In those two early books, the Standing Rock Sioux tribal member hit a nerve that has continued to pulse and mature with each successive wave of his writings. Over the years the enthusiastic response has grown into an intense following that appreciates and respects and enjoys the work. The enjoyment part is central. Deloria is not only readable and informative. He can be very funny in framing the various phenomena coming at the Indian communities though the jaded eye of the millennial observer. Perhaps the most incisive piece of Deloria is his ironic humor - caustic, not quite brutal - with which he peppers his subjects as he prepares to cook them crisply. Framing the issue of anthropology from a Native grassroots perspective, he gave us the memorable phrases: ''Into each life, it is said, some rain must fall ... But Indians have been cursed above all other people in history. Indians have anthropologists.''
Deloria similarly framed the issue of missionaries; he challenged anti-Indian educators and policies; he diligently surveyed the treaty history, the history of loss of Indian lands and assets, consistently finding and upholding bases of Indian jurisdictional rights and the illogic of the rationale for dispossessing the American Indian peoples of North America.
Joining the fray over the Bering Strait theory, in characteristic fashion he debunks the frail trail of evidence still cited as irrefutable by most of science that America was uniformly peopled by migrations crossing over from Eurasia over the frozen Bering Sea. Right or wrong in these cases, ultimately, Deloria rightfully questions the canon principles of the Western thinking on Indians; the easy assertions about culture; the ''time when conferences on Indians had no Indians, when buffs and hobbyists made major policy decisions regarding the fate and future of Indians, and when a handful of church representatives conferred quietly with the Secretary of the Interior about federal programs.''
Professor of History of Law at the University of Arizona, he directed the graduate program in American Indian Policy Studies. Now retired from the University of Colorado, he has served on various boards including the National Museum of the American Indian and the Intertribal Bison Council and continues to write and to lecture.
Among Deloria's principal books:

The Spring Beauty (an Ojibwe Legend)
An old man was sitting in his lodge, by the side of a frozen stream. It was the end of winter, the air was not so cold, and his fire was nearly out. He was old and alone. His locks were white with age, and he trembled in every joint. Day after day passed, and he heard nothing but the sound of the storm sweeping before it the new-fallen snow.
One day while his fire was dying, a handsome young man approached and entered the lodge. His cheeks were red, his eyes sparkled. He walked with a quick, light step. His forehead was bound with a wreath of sweet-grass, and he carried a bunch of fragrant flowers in his hand.
"Ah, my son," said the old man, "I am happy to see you. Come in! Tell me your adventures, and what strange lands you have seen. I will tell you of my wonderful deeds, and what I can perform. You shall do the same, and we will amuse each other."
The old man then drew from a bag a curiously wrought pipe. He filled it with mild tobacco, and handed it to his guest. They each smoked from the pipe and then began their stories.
"I am Peboan, the Spirit of Winter," said the old man. "I blow my breath, and the streams stand still. The water becomes stiff and hard as clear stone."
"I am Seegwun, the Spirit of Spring," answered the youth. "I breathe, and flowers spring up in the meadows and woods."
"I shake my locks," said the old man, "and snow covers the land. The leaves fall from the trees, and my breath blows them away. The birds fly to a distant land, and the animals hide themselves from the cold."
"I shake my ringlets," said the young man, "and warm showers of soft rain fall upon the earth. The flowers lift their heads from the ground, the grass grows thick and green. My voice recalls the birds, and they come flying joyfully from the Southland. The warmth of my breath unbinds the streams, and they sing the songs of summer. Music fills the groves where- ever I walk, and all nature rejoices."
And while they were talking thus a wonderful change took place. The sun began to rise. A gentle warmth stole over the place. Peboan, the Spirit of Winter, became silent. His head drooped, and the snow outside the lodge melted away. Seegwun, the Spirit of Spring, grew more radiant, and rose joyfully to his feet. The robin and the bluebird began to sing on the top of the lodge. The stream began to murmur at the door, and the fragrance of opening flowers came softly on the breeze.
The lodge faded away, and Peboan sank down and dissolved into tiny streams of water, that vanished under the brown leaves of the forest. Thus the Spirit of Winter departed, and where he had melted away, there the Indian children gathered the first blossoms, fragrant and delicately pink,—the modest Spring Beauty. ~ Henry R. "Western civilization, unfortunately, does not link knowledge and morality but rather, it connects knowledge and power and makes them equivalent. Today with an information superhighway now looming on the horizon, we are told that a lack of access to information will doom people to a life of meaninglessness -- and poverty. As we look around and observe modern industrial society, however, there is no question that information, in and of itself, is useless and that as more data is generated, ethical and moral decisions are taking on a fantasy dimension in which a 'lack of evidence to indict' is the moral equivalent of the good deed."
"In recent years we have come to understand what progress is. It is the total replacement of nature by an artificial technology. Progress is the absolute destruction of the real world in favor of a technology that creates a comfortable way of life for a few fortunately situated people. Within our lifetime the differences between the Indian use of the land and the white use of the land will become crystal clear. The Indian lived with his land. The white destroyed his land. He destroyed the planet earth."
"Scientists, and I use the word as loosely as possible, are committed to the view that Indians migrated to this country over an imaginary Bering Straits bridge, which comes and goes at the convenience of the scholar requiring it to complete his or her theory. Initially, at least, Indians are homogenous. But there are also eight major language families within the Western Hemisphere, indicating to some scholars that if Indians followed the trend that can be identified in other continents, then the migration went from east to west; tourists along the Bering straits were going TO Asia, not migrating FROM it."
