Positions on the Elder Council occasionally become open due to changes in health, career, family, life style, etc. The Council also creates new positions in order to expand MAIC programs and services to better serve our membership and the public. Openings are announced in the Smoke Signal newsletter and during meetings and events.
Applicants for a position on the Elder Council are asked to:
1. read the following profiles and job descriptions
2. Submit a letter of candidacy
3. Two (2) reference letters
4. A brief resumé.

Note: No monetary compensation is offered for any Officer and Elder Council positions. However, the rewards are substantial. Directly related expenses may be reimbursed with prior approval.
PROFILE
This
profile is a general description of the individual who will be nominated and
approved to fill the seat of Education Elder on the Manataka American Indian
Council’s Elder Council. It is
intended to be broad description with room for ample interpretation and
discretion by the Elders when determining which candidate would be best suited
for the position.
The
Candidate will…
Be a member in good standing with a good record of attendance and participation in MAIC activities; (20 points)
The
candidate must be at least 32 years of age -- according the MAIC
Constitution.
Be of good moral character; (20
pts)
Be committed to the ideals and principals of MAIC; (20 pts)
Be a college graduate or have equivalent work experience in elementary,
high school or college level instruction or education administration, grant
writing, communications, writing, journalism, public relations, advertising,
marketing, sales, internet web design, public speaking, and other related
fields; (20 pts)
Has work and/or volunteer experience in education, training programs,
ministry, public relations, public speaking, communications, writing,
journalism and related fields; (20 pts)
Experienced in computer communications (email, word processing
programs); (20 pts)
Submits letters of recommendation from MAIC members, tribal/spiritual
leaders; (10 pts)
Submits a resume of professional and volunteer experience; (10 pts)
Submits a written statement about reasons for joining the Elder
Council; (10 pts)
Submits a written nomination from a current member of the Elder
Council; (20 pts)

Candidates are instructed to submit information two weeks prior to appearing before the Elders at regularly called Elder Council Meeting for a private interview.
The Education Elder must…
Own and maintain a computer and email account in good working
condition;
Be intimately familiar and knowledgeable of MAIC history and American
Indian history;
Research, design, develop and write education curriculum for 3rd
to 9th grade elementary educational programs from an Indian
perspective; write teacher’s manual, program testing and evaluations;
Assemble teaching aids and tools that augment Indian perspective
educational curriculum;
Research, develop and write grants;
Maintain a contact computerized list of educational resources;
Consistently
attends Elder Council meetings and MAIC events;
Coordinate
educational programs and presentations with schools, civic groups;
Maintain
consistent contact with all Elders by email, telephone, mail and in-person
visits;
Organize
and supervise the Education Committee; Assign volunteer work and projects;
Volunteer
a minimum of six (6) hours per week;
Regularly
attends MAIC Elder Council meetings;
Obtain approval for educational programs and grants from MAIC officers;

The Treasurer must…
Own and maintain a computer and email account in good working
condition;
Be intimately familiar and knowledgeable of all MAIC issues and
history;
Assemble, maintain and properly store all financial records, whether they be written documents or computerized records in a safe and secure manner;
Perform
a monthly accounting of all income and disbursements;
Report
all financial details at each meeting of the Elder Council;
Create an annual budget for consideration of the Elders; The budget shall not exceed estimated revenues.
Maintain a computerized list of all vendors, members and contributors;
Coordinate disbursements with MAIC Officers, Elders, Chairpersons;
Obtains approval from the Executive Board of the Elders Council before disbursement of funds not regularly scheduled in the formal annual bu
At least thirty (30) days prior to the convening of each regular session
of the Elder Council, the Treasurer shall make and present to the Elder Council
an itemized estimate of the revenues to be received by the MAIC, together with a
statement of the sources from which revenues are to be received, under the laws,
grants, judgments, interests, and any other sources in effect at the time such
estimate is made for the next ensuing fiscal year. The Treasurer shall prepare
annual financial statements reflecting the
results of operation of all organizational activities and shall prepare a consolidated
balance sheet in conformity with generally accepted accounting principals within
sixty (60) days after the end of the fiscal year.
No bank account or other depository of tribal funds shall be
established by any person or entity without the knowledge and consent of the
Elder Council. The Treasurer shall establish bank accounts only at
recognized banking institutions as approved by the Elder Council and all
disbursements from said accounts shall require the signature of no less than two
elected officers. All persons
handling tribal funds in excess of $5,000.00 shall be bonded by a surety bond
paid by the MAIC.
No person shall obligate
or otherwise expend funds of the MAIC without expressed written authorization
and knowledge of the Elder Council, either by approved budget or more specific
authorization by item.

Volunteer

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Public Relations Elder must…
Own and maintain a computer and email account in good working
condition;
Be intimately familiar and knowledgeable of all MAIC issues and
history;
Write and distribute monthly meeting announcements to the media (Media
is defined as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, internet sites and
other interested entities.
Write and distribute event, special interest and organization media
releases on a regular basis;
Maintain a contact computerized list of all media in Arkansas, regional
and national media;
Consistently
attends Elder Council meetings and MAIC events;
Coordinate
media press releases with MAIC Officers, Elders, Chairpersons; Maintains
consistent contact with all Elders by email, telephone, mail and in-person
visits;
Organize
and lead the Public Relations Committee; Assign volunteer work and projects;
Volunteer
a minimum of four (4) hours per week;
Regularly make in-person visits to media representatives;
Obtains approval for media releases from MAIC officers.
