Legend has
it that Grass Dancing came from young boys tying grass
on their outfits. Before a dance could be held on the
prairie the grass had to be stomped down. This is where
many of the movements are believed to come from.
Afterwards the dancers would tie the grass to their
outfit. Many believe that the Omaha tribe originated the
dance in their warrior societies.
The "swaying" style of northern dancing is
probably the most unique aspect of the northern area.
Upon seeing this kind of dancing for the first time, it
hardly looks like Indian dancing. In some cases it more
closely resembles many types of popular Latin-American
dancing, with much emphasis being placed on the shaking
of the shoulders.
The Grass Dance regalia is made to conform to the style
of dancing. Traditional outfits simply cannot stand up
to this rigorous style of dancing.
Over the years the Grass Dance has evolved to become the
most competitive form of Northern dancing to be found
today.
